Our May Twilight Talk – kindly sponsored by Ecomerchant.
Water is essential to human life – and to the environment, economy and society. Nothing can happen without water! Nicci Russell, CEO of Waterwise, talked about how homes and buildings have an essential part to play in adapting to the climate emergency through water efficiency – as well as supporting net zero as water efficiency also cuts carbon use (and domestic and business energy and water bills). Building on government, regulatory and sector progress to date, and Waterwise’s UK Water Efficiency Strategy to 2030, Nicci set out the role the construction sector has to play in this crucial and existential issue – and how Waterwise can help.

If you want to learn more about sustainable construction, check out our upcoming events:
- Goldfinch Create & Play is a two-storey mid-terrace café and creative community space which was required to achieve the Passivhaus Classic standard (certification pending). This meant high levels of insulation, airtightness, and filtered ventilation, and whole life carbon analysis was carried out to assess the impact on a whole life basis, of both the active and passive elements. Join different members of the project team as they talk us through the build on May 21st.
- Next week we have a site visit to the MBC Timber Frame Factory in Gloucester! As part of the visit, the MBC Sales Director and MBC Technical Director will introduce the work carried out by MBC before guiding you through a factory tour and explaining the various MBC Timber Frame systems, as well as a hands-on look at high-performing windows.
- Biodiversity Net Gain is development that leaves biodiversity in a better state than before. It sits within the Environment Bill which, when in force, will require all development schemes to deliver a mandatory 10% biodiversity net gain to be maintained for at least 30 years. Our 2-hour live online training session on May 23rd will cover the new Biodiversity Net Gain mandatory requirements and what you need to do to comply.
- A growing number of construction professionals are dedicated to supporting the retrofit revolution – but sometimes clients don’t initially realise they are part of that journey! On June 4th, Louise Ciotti of Adapt Architects and UWE Bristol will discuss different types of retrofit work including how to educate and encourage clients to consider retrofit, touching on grants support and engaging with SME contractors.
