Event Details

Registration is closed for this event
This event is part of the ‘Delivering Affordable Net-Zero Housing’ series of 8 webinars run in conjunction with the Eastern New Energy project. The series focuses on the nitty gritty details of what is working and what it costs to meet the net-zero challenge.

A “fabric first” approach is essential to delivering Passive House standard homes and an assured platform for delivering net-zero performance. But fabric alone cannot reach net-zero. Attention needs to be paid also to the most appropriate energy system/solution for a range of project requirements, and to resident behaviour.

Renewable energy solutions have been thrust increasingly into the limelight as energy performance of buildings and climate change actions become increasingly important priorities – and regulatory obligations. This can lead to reactive, inefficient solutions.

Some of the energy solutions being touted are simply not practical or cost effective, or fragmented in their approach. This session will take a step back to review the current options – pros and cons – and outline more joined-up, holistic approaches to energy system design.

This two-hour online session will cover:

  • Recap - the different definitions of net-zero in construction, who is using them and how these will drive briefs and specifications
  • Using energy efficiently: optimising energy use in new build using sensors and data
  • The pros and cons of current renewable energy technologies/solutions
  • Using renewables and battery storage
  • Optimising energy use at the level of the development rather than at the level of the individual house
  • Outsourcing energy generation and storage to Energy Services Companies (ESCOs) to reduce capital cost
  • Creating social value and wellbeing using onsite renewables.

Alex Templeton, Energy Innovation Lead for Community Works CIC will host the session.

We will be joined by Joe Miles from Atamate, an expert in building performance measurement; Renewable Energy Consultant (ENE region) ; John Cape from Suffolk Community Energy CIC and Power Circle; and David Morgan, former Head of Cities for EON and CEO of SmartKlub.

This live and interactive session will have Q&A breaks, so if you have questions on your net-zero homes project be sure to ask our panel of experts in the live Q&A.
