About the event
The site visit will introduce round timber framing for buildings in Roundwood Design’s unique manufacturing style, which uses locally sourced timber. During the visit, delegates will be guided along the processes involved, from the selection of the standing trees through to the finished frame. Possibilities for roundwood framing will be discussed, providing inspiration for future projects.
Roundwood Design’s innovative prefab panel system, One-fill Panels, has been developed over the last few years. The panels are constructed and filled on site as one continuous void to eliminate cold bridging. Delegates will learn about these low-carbon insulated panels, view a case study and, through group discussion, have an opportunity to input in the future development of this locally manufactured system made from natural materials.
For those looking for hands-on learning, there is a chance to blast the bark off a log and try out 'the jig' which is where, we are told, the magic happens!
About the speaker
Tom Redfern is the Founder and Director of Roundwood Design and our speaker for this event. Tom started as a furniture maker 25 years ago, eventually moving into larger scale structures. Roundwood Design’s unique building style is very much informed by Tom’s background in furniture-making and different to the type of roundwood framing familiar to most, such as examples by Ben Law and those featured on Grand Designs.
