Retrofit Skills – Module 5 Insulation and Airtightness 12-02-25

Event Details

Welcome to Module 5 - Insulation and Airtightness Practical, the first practical module of the Retrofit Skills Level 2 course.

Contents of the Session:

  • Insulations and their properties
  • Installing insulation to maximise its thermal performance
  • Components of basic retrofit build-ups
  • Creating continuous air barriers
  • Assessment

This module focuses upon the principles and practical applications of insulation and airtightness.  You'll learn about different types of insulation, their properties and subsequent use-cases, as well as how to install insulation to optimise its thermal performance.

After this, you’ll move on to the practical element of the module where you'll demonstrate the best cutting methods for different insulation types, from flexible insulation like woodfibre to more rigid insulation like EPS.

The principles and practices of airtightness will be introduced, with consideration to the importance of detailing in creating a continuous air barrier. Airtightness materials will be discussed, with an opportunity for hands-on learning.

The practical assessment for this module will require you to demonstrate the above, as well as use appropriate products to create a continuous air barrier and demonstrate the installation of appropriate air barrier products.

After you have completed the in-person part of this module, you will be required to complete a series of multiple-choice questions for the online assessment.

Both practical and online assessments will need to be finished before this module can be considered complete.

Travel Information

Cars

All visitors to the Create Centre are entitled to a parking permit; these can be acquired from Create reception once you have found a parking space. This permit must then be displayed on the dashboard to prevent towing.

Blue badge holders will not need to collect a permit as long as they are displaying their badge.

Approach from the east down Cumberland Road, taking the left turn down Smeaton Road to the carpark, or from the north down Merchants Road, taking the left turn down Ashton Avenue, and following signs to the Create Centre, turning left down Smeaton Road to the carpark. Approaching from Brunel Way to the west is not possible.

Cycling

Cycle racks are avaialble in the car park, however we recommend going to Create reception and asking for the combination code to the bike shed and storing your bike there.

Buses

The M2 bus from the City Centre to Long Ashton P&R is the best route to get to the Create Centre. It stops in Cumberland Basin, where it is less than a 5 minute walk to Create.
