The built environment touches the lives of almost every citizen; houses are where we live, work, learn and play. Real-world measurement is at the heart of genuinely finding out how good housing is - do you have building performance evaluation in place for your new build and retrofit projects? Our speakers will show you how.
As industry calls grow for post-occupancy and building performance evaluation to become a requirement, a new British Standard BS 40101 was launched in 2022 and Zack was the co-author. Julie co-authored the Building Performance Evaluation Toolkit for Wood Knowledge Wales.
Julie and Zack are both active members of the Building Performance Network and will present:
- an overview of latest guidance and practical resources available
- an author's outline of the new British Standard for Building Performance Evaluation BS 40101
- examples of how you can bring evaluation application and benefits into your projects
- case studies in newbuild and retrofit
About the trainers
Julie Godefroy, Head of Sustainability, CIBSE
Julie is a chartered engineer. She works as Head of Sustainability for CIBSE, where she leads the work on climate action including the Net Zero Carbon Building Standard, policy work, and collaboration with other institutions for joint climate action. She also works as independent sustainability consultant, with current projects including building performance evaluation, and overheating in existing homes and retrofits.
Dr Zachary Gill, Soap Retrofit, Energiesprong
Zack is a building performance expert, working and challenging the field of low-energy domestic buildings for over 15 years. His PhD research focused on the contribution of user behaviours to building performance with Buro Happold Engineers. Subsequently, he worked with Willmott Dixon
Energy Services, pioneering performance-feedback approaches, in particular on their wide-scale social housing retrofit schemes. In 2019, Zack established his own building performance consultancy, SOAP Retrofit Ltd. He also co-authored the British Standard on Building Performance Evaluation BS40101.
Two core mantras drive Zack and SOAP’s work:
1. "You can't manage what you can't measure."
2. "In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they aren't."
