In the UK, 'fabric first, technology second' has become the central tenet for good practice in new and renovated low carbon buildings. The aim is to make the envelopes of the buildings provide as comfortable, affordable and energy efficient an environment as possible for their whole life in use, and reduce the reliance on technologies and building services systems that need power, maintenance and eventually replacement.

In this new 5-part ONLINE series for 2023, we cover how to ensure that your building services are as integrated and appropriate as possible for their current and future use, and are installed to high standards in a way that does not compromise their own efficiency or that of other systems and measures in the building.

We aim to show what good looks like - and some of the bad and the ugly as well - to explain why a piecemeal approach without an overall integrated services plan serves none of the installations or the outcomes well. Different trades and specialists coming in without an understanding of the whole system design can make a good design perform badly in use.

About the session

Vince House will explain how demand controlled ventilation works and why it performs as a low carbon solution when space and budget are tight. He has recently been back to see how installations done 10 years ago are performing and will give you the insights on designing and installing these systems for best performance.
