About the event

Off-site manufacture and modern methods of construction (MMC) can considerably reduce the overall impact of construction on the environment with efficient use of materials, less waste and more robust detailing achieved in factory-controlled conditions.

However, there are many methods of off-site manufacture and MMC so for this new half-day event The Green Register is pleased to present three speakers, each with their own approach to this type of construction:

Jasper Meade, Director of PYC group, will explain how PYC’s fabric first approach means concentrating on the energy performance of the building envelope by using high performing materials throughout the construction process. PYC specialises in passivhaus and low energy construction by manufacturing bespoke timber frames, panelised and pre-insulated at their House Building Factory in Mid Wales. In addition, Jasper will expand on the 6 main points for off-site manufacture and how this approach is better for the environment.

Speaker Jackson Moulding, Director of SNUG Homes, will talk about their approach to creating carbon positive homes that benefit people and the planet. SNUG homes is a community focused off-site fabrication space, creating prefabricated, adaptable and flexible modular properties, made with quality natural materials and are highly energy efficient. There is a focus on how to make the homes customisable and self-finishable, so that future residents can play a part in their design and construction. To help drive the change for a low carbon and environmentally sensitive future, the SNUG team aim to support the empowerment of communities through their developments.

Finally we'll be joined by speaker Ian Hutchcroft, Director of Energiesprong UK, who will explain how their unique approach to high performance retrofit is both effective and affordable. Energiesprong – originating in the Netherlands - is a process of fitting prefabricated shells of highly insulated panels to the floor/walls/roof of an existing building to increase its thermal efficiency. In the UK 6 social landlords have delivered net zero retrofit using the Energiesprong approach and offsite component and 9 landlords are contracting with four Solution Providers for delivery of over 2,500 homes starting in 2022. The Energiesprong approach results in homes that are brought up to a minimum net-zero energy standard, creating warmer, more desirable places to live.

Each speaker will present their unique approach to off-site manufacture, why they have chosen this type of application and what they see as the major benefits and drawbacks, then invite Q&A from attendees.

We'll close the session with a panel Q&A session, sure to include some lively debate!

About the speakers

Ian Hutchcroft, Director, Energiesprong UK

Energiesprong is an approach to delivering zero carbon retrofit & new build homes, using offsite approaches, financed by savings and with performance guaranteed.

Ian is part of the Energiesprong team adapting the Dutch developed approach for the UK market, working closely with teams in Netherlands, France and Germany.  He is leading ground-breaking delivery projects across the UK, including the Mayor of London’s Retrofit Accelerator Homes programme and the Zero Energy Buildings Catalyst project, and now building a volume market with social landlords and industry partners. Ian is also Chair of Plymouth Energy Community and has previously worked with pioneer NGOs, local authorities and architects developing zero carbon solutions.  He has won two Ashden Awards for sustainable energy innovation.

Jasper Meade, Director, PYC group

With over 25 years’ experience in the sustainable building industry, Jasper is committed to providing quality low energy solutions for high performance buildings. PYC has its own off-site house building factory in Wales producing fully engineered, insulated and air-tight closed panels using timber I-beams. Jasper champions the growth of Passive House in the UK, particularly in Wales, and frequently speaks at building conferences.

Jasper is a director on the board of Woodknowledge Wales, focusing on the development of companies involved in the supply, demand and use of timber in construction in Wales. He is also Group Leader of AECB Wales, a member of the Alliance of Sustainable Building Products, and presents regularly at Passive House conferences. Believing firmly in education and innovation for the future, Jasper regularly conducts CPD seminars at architect practices and universities.

Jackson Moulding, Director, SNUG Homes

Jackson has worked in the field of community-led housing over the last 20 years. His background is in environmental sustainability, energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Jackson is a fellow of the School For Social Entrepreneurs and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce and when not building Snug homes, has been known to explore innovative design and construction of small dwellings in Japan, USA and Canada as part of a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust fellowship.
