Retrofitting Traditional Buildings 2: Case Studies (Online)

Event Details

Registration is closed for this event
This half-day seminar presents a range of case study projects involving traditional and historic buildings across the UK, illustrating the key principles and details required for a holistic, whole-building approach to retrofit.

Event information

The follow up course to Retrofitting Traditional Building 1: Principles and Practice.

Please note that due to popular demand, this course has been designed as a follow up to Nick Heath's "Retrofitting Traditional Building 1: Principles and Practice" course.  It is strongly suggested (but not compulsory), that delegates attend the first course before this Case Studies session.

Case studies include a range of project types including domestic and non-domestic, urban and rural, listed and unlisted buildings, conversions and deep- to medium-level performance targets. Both completed and uncompleted projects are presented, together with pre-retrofit performance analysis, hygrothermal simulations, detailed architectural drawings and post-occupancy monitoring where available to demonstrate the links between theory and practice.

Most projects represent good practice, but there are also opportunities to learn from examples of poor practice and/or unintended consequences, highlighting the importance of de-risking projects via a robust, holistic approach.

As well as being taken through several completed projects in detail, subject to group preference delegates will also have the opportunity to work through a project, working individually and together to identify appropriate retrofit strategies. This will allow delegates to compare experience, work through some of the challenges involved in a typical traditional building retrofit, discuss different approaches and highlight the importance of treating every building individually.

Case studies will change over time, but will cover award-winning projects from renowned retrofit specialists as well as lesser-known projects. Project types are likely to include examples of: deep retrofit of brick-built townhouses; mid-level retrofit of different property types across Scotland; non-domestic EnerPHit retrofit; rural stone building retrofit & barn conversion; and more. WUFI moisture risk analysis will be covered, and delegates will also be shown resources to explore a wide range of case studies across the UK and Europe.

ARB and RIBA Mandatory CPD Requirements

As of January 2024, all architects on the UK Register are required by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) to record and confirm participation in CPD to maintain registration. ARB’s CPD scheme is activity-based and is focused on learning outcomes. You can find out more about ARB’s CPD requirements here.

View or download this checklist which shows in more detail how attendance on this course can help you meet these requirements.
