About the Event

Dovetail Design and Build will show us round their current project at The Yard, a pioneering community of self-built and eco-friendly homes. This particular house is a little different to its neighbours, while most were completed during the initial development, it stood as an unfinished shell for almost 20 years. Dovetail’s clients saw its potential at auction and set out with the ambition of creating a high-performing, carefully considered eco home.  

The initial stage designs were created by Askew Cavanna Architects, while Olivia Bailwood has collaborated on the finishing packages including the bespoke stairs. With its distinctive curved walls and unique angles, the build has been as technically demanding as it is inspiring, offering Dovetail the chance to really celebrate craftsmanship and creative design. Every step of the process has focused on airtightness, thermal efficiency, and sustainability, ensuring the finished home will not only be environmentally responsible but also a true reflection of the clients’ vision. 

What Visitors Will Be Able to See

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the project at a pivotal stage in its construction. Key features on display include: 

• The insulated timber frame 
• Newly installed Rationel windows, set within the original openings 
• Airtight membrane detailing 
• MVHR (Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery) ducting 
• The home just before drylining, providing a rare behind-the-scenes view of the fabric-first approach before it is concealed 

Guests will also gain insight into Dovetail’s collaborative build process, learning how the team works closely with clients and architects to achieve innovative, sustainable outcomes.
