JIA Architects

JIA Architects is a RIBA Chartered Practice based around Bristol. Founded in 1983, we joined the Green Register in 2004, embracing its values of environmental responsibility and sustainability in construction. Design can be fun, but it needs the right environment to develop and thrive. We aim to foster a creative space in which various strategies can be explored with our clients, compared, developed and where happenstance can happen. Coincidentally, JIA means 'home' in Mandarin, and we aim to imbue all our design projects with a sense of place that this word conveys. We are equally comfortable in stitching together the fabric of existing buildings or creating new structures and spaces, working closely with clients in residential, healthcare, commercial and industrial sectors. This range allows us to maintain a varied and stimulating portfolio of building types. Some of our recent projects include a fourteen apartment development in Clevedon, which has an extensive installation of photovoltaic collectors on the roof and a double height Solarium facing the street. This room is a communal facility where residents can enjoy the sunshine and meet neighbours on an informal basis, passing the time of day. Stunning views over the River Severn are constantly altering; these can be experienced from large balconies, which open off living rooms and principal bedrooms on the more private side of the building. JIA developed a contemporary solution in the continuing re-interpretation of the terrace house type on a site on the edge of Bath. A wide fronted, narrow depth house plan was adapted, allowing dual aspect living rooms and views out over open countryside for most bedrooms. The narrow depth of the houses meant that enough space remained in the shallow site for car parking and rear gardens. So, whatever your starting point, we will help formulate your ideas and bring clear, jargon-free thinking to develop them into attractive and workable solutions.
