The practice was formed in 1979 by Mike Litchfield and Stephen Howarth (both now retired) and was
originally established on commissions in the hotel, medical and education sectors. As the
practice has grown it's secured work in the commercial, residential and industrial sectors as well
as winning commissions on specialist projects including data centres.
The practice is now led by five directors, is based in Durham and has delivered numerous Sustainable projects including amongst others:
Trinity Academy (Doncaster), Treetops (private residential conversion), Parsons Depot (Sunderland City Council EV Fleet storage facility) and Sacriston Surgery. The latter set new standards in sustainability back in 2008/9 and went on to win numerous awards including Durham County Council’s Environmental Award, The Journal Landmark Environmental Award, Durham County Council’s Outstanding Award, RICS Renaissance Award for Community Benefit & RICS Grand Final National Award for Community Benefit.
The practice also has heritage expertise and its reputation in this field continues to grow along with HL Interiors which both add diversity and experience to the practice.
The practive has completed projects throughout the country and across many sectors and the principles of the founding partners have continued with the growth and evolution of the practice.
This success is due to the design team. Our team deliver projects of all sizes for clients throughout the UK, adding value to every project by combining the right mix of skills, technology, expertise and flair. We have a history of training and developing new staff so they can grow their experience within the practice.
We have a proud reputation for reliable delivery of projects as the lead consultant, or through professional collaboration. Our philosophy is to pull together the best expertise into a project team, whether in design or management assignments. We enjoy many long-standing joint venture relationships and alliances for project delivery and they remain important to our history and future.
