In the space of ten years, thermography has transitioned from the expensive technical fringe to a mainstream acceptable Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) tool. Across the industry, new and innovative techniques are being developed, but more importantly through accredited training and peer group reviews, defined processes and methods ensure that a quality product can be delivered in a timely cost effective manner.

For all buildings - but in particular, those intended to meet stringent standards -  there is a need to ensure that what has been designed has actually been built.

Trainers Ray Faulkner and Bruce Arnold will open this Bite-Size session with a brief explanation on how thermography works and has developed in the last thirty years. They will then cover building thermography examining the detection of ‘Continuity of Insulation’, ‘Thermal Bridging’ and ‘Air Leakage’ utilizing qualitative and quantitative techniques such as Thermal Indexing. 

In particular the survey requirements for a BREEAM credit will be discussed from ‘Environmental Conditions’ and ‘Qualifications’ to ‘Consistency of Approach’ and ‘Reporting Standards’. The session will conclude with a brief look at how thermography can map ‘thermal comfort’ within a space, assist with ‘Dispute Resolution’ and be integrated into the ‘Commissioning of a Building’. 

About the trainers

Ray Faulkner is a PCN Level3 Thermographer, owner and managing director of iRed Ltd.  He started the company in 2002 as a complete change from a successful career as an airline captain with KLMuk. Ray has played an active part in the United Kingdom Thermography Association (UKTA) as vice-chair and chair of the Buildings Committee until he completed its restructuring as an ‘Authority’ in November 2015. Ray is still an active committee member on BINDT thermography working groups (CM & NDT) and a BSI working committee member. In 2013 he wrote and established the ABBE Thermography Accreditation Scheme, which was developed specifically for thermographers in the built environment.

Bruce Arnold CEng, FIMechE, MCIBSE is a PCN level 2 thermographer and senior trainer at iRed Ltd. As a chartered engineer he brings a wealth of experience to the team. Having been an engineering officer on naval nuclear submarines for many years, Bruce now conducts thermographic building surveys on behalf of iRed specialising in BREEAM and investigative projects. Bruce is also a committee member on the UKTA, chairing the Building Thermography Sub-committee.
