Site Visit: Low Carbon Timber Frame New Build Using Natural Materials (Bristol)

Event Details

Join us to visit this exciting project in Stoke Gifford, Bristol, where Greenheart are leading on the build of a new low carbon timber frame dwelling using a high proportion of natural materials.

About this event

Speakers Richard Hatfield - Construction Manager, and Henry Duncan - Project Designer, from sustainable design and build specialists Greenheart, will guide you around the site of this timber frame, 4 bed, 2 storey house.

Greenheart are involved in delivering this project up to ‘Shell only’ which will include completion of the ‘Envelope.’ This is a great opportunity to see how the dwelling has been constructed and materials used.

Richard and Henry will outline different aspects of the build, including:

  • Timber frame construction using engineered timber I Joists, Pro Passiv OSB and glulam beams and columns.
  • A feature double height space in the centre of the house over the dining area and a ‘bridge’ walkway connecting the two sides of the house upstairs.
  • The reasons various insulation types are being used; e.g. wood fibre cladding to external surfaces; lining stage using Warmcell, membrane and battening for internal wall insulation.
  • Levels of airtightness achieved through installing high performing windows and doors
  • The reasons and benefits of choosing natural building materials as part of the structure, including: Mayan Slate Roof, Brimstone Ash timbe cladding and Forest Pennant Stone to ground floor walls

Light refreshments will be provided. This event will take place as an in-person, live session. A risk assessment has been undertaken, and the PPE requirements are: please wear your own Hi-Vis and sturdy footwear.

About the Speakers

Richard Hatfield, MSc MRes – Director and Project Manager, Greenheart

Over twenty years of Managing Greenheart Construction has given Richard a wealth of experience in the green building sector. Prior to that Richard’s background was in Carpentry, building his own timber framed house, civil engineering and environmental consultancy. He has a masters in Built environment research from Leeds University and has always been passionate advocate of being part of the solution to climate change.

Henry Duncan - Director and Design Manager, Greenheart

Henry is a Carpenter turned designer, Passivhaus consultant and co-director of Greenheart. With a degree in 3D design from the University of Brighton, and a background in traditional oak framing, Henry approaches design challenges from a construction perspective. Aesthetics, form, texture, light and space are pillars of good architectural design, but worthless if the building can’t be built in a practical and cost-effective way and stand the test of time.

Greenheart specialises in new build passivhaus using low carbon materials. They emphasise the importance of team work to ensure all parties from clients to labourers are fully on board with what they are trying to achieve, and the process is positive, inclusive and enjoyable for all.
