Stone has been used as a structural material for thousands of years and yet its use has declined in recent times.
The loss of traditional skills and knowledge has led this once ubiquitous material to be perceived as expensive to quarry, cut and transport, being seen in the eyes of many as suitable only for cladding or flooring.
Yet when paired with a modern approach to structural analysis, design and detailing, and a rigorous statistical analysis of material strengths, stone can realise its potential as a material fit for the 21st century.
Join us and trainer Scott Boote, an experienced Chartered Structural Engineer who specialises in the pioneering use of structural stone, for this new 2-hour live online session. Scott will present practical guidance on key aspects of preliminary scheme development and detailed scheme design in structural stone.
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
- Describe the structural characteristics of stone and understand how to verify its suitability.
- List and interpret the advantages and limitations of using stone as a structural product, particularly when considering embodied carbon.
- Identify where and how stone may be used appropriately within a building structure.
- Know of the standards supporting the use of stone.
ARB and RIBA Mandatory CPD Requirements
As of January 2024, all architects on the UK Register are required by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) to record and confirm participation in CPD to maintain registration. ARB’s CPD scheme is activity-based and is focused on learning outcomes. You can find out more about ARB’s CPD requirements here.
This course relates to environmental sustainability, which is one of the mandatory topics for the 2025 ARB scheme.
View or download this checklist which shows in more detail how attendance on this course can help you meet these requirements.
About the trainer
Scott Boote CEng BEng (Hons) MIStructE, Agnos Studio
As a Chartered Structural Engineer with over 20 years professional experience, Scott always strives to shape a more sustainable future in the construction industry. His passion lies in architecturally led structures, where he thrives on collaborating closely with design teams to create innovative, low-carbon solutions that are as beautiful as they are functional.
Specialising in the use of low-carbon materials, Scott has pioneered the use of structural stone, rammed earth, and timber-concrete composites in modern construction. With over 60 completed projects in structural stone - ranging from plain to post-tensioned – Scots is one of the few engineers globally with this level of expertise. This work was recognised with an IStructE Award in 2016.
