An Essential Guide to Assessing Carbon in Design: RICS Whole Life Carbon Standard 2023: 2nd Edition (Online)

Event Details

Whole life carbon assessment (WCLA) is becoming an increasingly important way of assessing the built environment to include both embodied and operational carbon.

Event information

An increasing number of local authorities have made mandatory whole life carbon assessments part of local planning requirements for some projects. Over time, it is likely that WLCA will become a formal part of national building regulations.

Join us for this 2.5 hour session providing a digestible update on RICS Whole Life Carbon Standard 2023 (2nd Edition) which is set to become the world-leading standard for consistent and accurate carbon measurement in the built environment.

Speakers and authors Simon Sturgis of Targeting Zero, Lee Leston-Jones of Cundall, Dr Qian Li of Turner & Townsend, Paul Astle of Ramboll and Clara Bagenal George of Etude will take you through the thinking and content of the 2nd Edition.

Their talks will be followed by a panel Q&A session with all questions welcome.

More about the updated 2nd Edition

This recent update to the RICS’s 2017 whole life carbon assessment methodology is more comprehensive in both scope and in detail. It covers all building and infrastructure types, including new build, retrofit, housing, mixed use, and fitout.

The revised standard brings the guidance up to date with UK climate legislation (2019, 2021) and is consistent with forthcoming EU Standards (prEN15978 etc). It also incorporates thinking from guidance such as CIBSE TM65, IStructE, LETI, RIBA and others.

The guidance is intended to be more user-friendly and includes many more diagrams and tables. It deals with issues such as risk and contingency, translating energy use to carbon emissions, and more detail on grid decarbonisation.

Who should attend?

Architects, designers, and any construction professionals keen to learn about WLCA methodology.
