About this session
Topic 1: The Principles of Lifecycle Analysis
There is extensive information – and legislation – around operational energy but we are still specifying and installing building materials with high whole life carbon.
The construction industry is becoming more effective at reducing the operational energy of buildings and therefore the whole life carbon as a proportion of a building project increases.
This session will explain how all members of the design team can play their part in reducing the environmental impact of building materials and will cover:
- Clarification of terms such as embodied carbon, embodied energy and whole life carbon
- The five stages of Life Cycle Analyses (LCAs)
- The cradle-to-grave, cradle-to-gate and cradle-to-cradle approaches
- Closing the loop and reducing waste in construction
- An overview of some alternatives to high environmental impact materials and products (samples available when delivered in person)
- Using window frame materials to test the effectiveness of LCAs
Topic 2: Introduction to Low Carbon Technologies
Consumer demand for low carbon technologies has significantly increased over the past few years due to awareness of the climate emergency and the carbon emissions fossil fuels generate. As the UK’s wind farms, solar panels, biomass and hydro plants (ie renewable energy) generate more electricity year on year, low carbon technologies that use electricity will become more widely used.
To date, the most popular technologies have been solar thermal and photovoltaic panels but some energy systems that have previously not been considered low carbon options as they rely on electricity - such as heat pumps - are seeing a rise in popularity as electricity in the UK is increasingly generated by renewables.
Low carbon technologies topics covered:
- the difference between low carbon technologies and renewable energy technologies
- pros and cons of the main technologies available including the technical aspects of some of the main systems
- an update on heat pumps, which are seeing a rise in popularity right now
- review of Government incentives past, present and future such as the Renewable Heat incentive, Feed In Tariffs and its successor

Who is this session for?
The session is ideal for anyone as an introduction to lifecycle analysis principles and low carbon technologies; the training offers ideal foundation knowledge for any professional, including architects, engineers, surveyors, contractors and builders as well energy assessors, and all with an interest in sustainable building.
Architects – need to meet the new ARB CPD requirements on Environmental Sustainability?
As of January 2024, all architects on the UK Register are required by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) to record and confirm participation in CPD to maintain registration.
ARB’s CPD scheme is activity-based and is focused on learning outcomes. While some may choose to fulfil their ARB CPD requirements through courses such as this one, ARB will accept any activity for which an architect can demonstrate a learning outcome and how they have applied that learning outcome to their practice as valid CPD.

About the trainer
Lucy Pedler, BA Arch, Dip Arch
Lucy is an architect with 34 years of professional experience in the UK and USA and has particular expertise in sustainable building practices. Lucy created The Green Register in 2000, now a nationwide networking and educational not-for-profit organisation promoting sustainable building practices to all disciplines of the construction industry.
In 1999, Lucy started her own sustainable architecture practice, archipeleco, designing buildings that have a low impact on the environment. In 2005, Paul McWilliams joined archipeleco to then create develeco limited, a company exclusively self-funded to offer refurbishments of existing buildings - usually in very poor condition - and transform the properties into sustainable, beautiful buildings fit for 21st century living.
Lucy has had a lifelong passion for low impact buildings and was recognised as an Earth Champion in 2015. She is also very keen on land-based travel, often on a bike (not surprising given her surname).
