About the course

This course, developed and delivered by Optimum Energy Solutions provides a practical introduction to heat pumps and covers technologies including heat pumps and solar thermal, heat pump surveys and requirements for MCS certification.

The course is held online over 2 days online held on each Monday/Tuesday and Wednesday/Thursday in October commencing at 0900 and finishing around 1600 each day with breaks for lunch, morning and afternoon tea breaks. This course is part-funded and supported by the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

Course content and format

You’ll learn about these key areas:

  • Understand the basics of what a heat pump does and how it does it
  • Conduct heat loss surveys
  • Size an ASHP system
  • Assistance to gain MCS accreditation

The course covers Heat loss calculations and surveys, Heat Pump theory and installation, Solar Thermal fundamentals, and support to those who wish to gain MCS accreditation.

Course learning objectives

By the end of the course candidates will: 

  • Know the relevant regulations/standards and requirements relating to practical installation, testing and commissioning activities for heat pump installation work
  • Know how to survey a property in order to produce heat loss calculations, design and dimension a heat pump system
  • Know the health and safety risks and safe systems of work associated with heat pump system installation work
  • Know the types and application of heat pump systems
  • Know how the performance of a heat pump system is measured
  • Know how to apply for MCS accreditation

About the trainers

Clive Archer, Director, Optimum Energy Solutions

Clive has been involved in the heat pump sector for more than fifteen years working on Air, Ground and Water Source heat pump systems in the UK.

Clive has been responsible for numerous projects up to 680 kilowatt commercial systems as Operations Manager for one of the biggest and longest established companies in the UK, responsible for surveying, designing, installation, commissioning and project managing. He is also a fully qualified DEA and PAS2035 Retrofit Assessor.


Marc Youle-Grayling, Director, Optimum Energy Solutions

Marc has worked in renewable technology for more than fifteen years in the UK and overseas. He designed, specified, and project managed a water source heat pump system for The Salmon Centre on the Isle of Man Laxey which is powered by a hydro plant.

He has also developed a unique array to supply the energy source for ground source heat pumps which has been performance validated by the Energy Savings Trust. Marc is also a BPEC accredited Renewable Technology instructor, a published author, and holds a masters in Renewable Solutions and Energy Efficiency in Buildings.

The course is heavily subsidized by BEIS with a charge to delegates of £175 or less. This course would normally cost £1,188 - spaces are limited so early subscription is advised.
