Please note that due to popular demand, this course has been designed as a follow up to Nick Heath's "Retrofitting Traditional Building 1: Principles and Practice" course.  It is strongly suggested (but not compulsory), that delegates attend the first course before this Case Studies session - please see the event listings for a RTB 1 course.

This new half-day seminar presents a range of case study projects involving traditional and historic buildings, illustrating the key principles and details required for a holistic, whole-building approach to retrofit.

Case studies include a range of project types including domestic and non-domestic, urban and rural, and listed and unlisted buildings, conversions and deep- to medium-level performance targets. Both completed and uncompleted projects are presented, together with pre-retrofit performance analysis, hygrothermal simulations, detailed architectural drawings and post-occupancy monitoring where available to demonstrate the links between theory and practice. Most projects represent good practice, but there are also examples of poor practice to demonstrate the wide range of unintended consequences that can occur without a robust approach.

As well as being taken through several completed projects in detail, delegates will also have the opportunity to work through real projects, working in groups to identify retrofit strategies for a range of scenarios. This will allow delegates to compare experience, work through some of the challenges involved in a typical traditional building retrofit, discuss different approaches and highlight the importance of treating every building individually.

About the trainer

This seminar is delivered by Nicholas Heath, a Certified Passivhaus Consultant and Director of independent building energy consultancy NDM Heath Ltd. Nicholas has authored numerous best-practice technical retrofit guides, research papers, planning guidance for low-energy refurbishment of traditional buildings and design & installation guidance for numerous local authorities; advised on national research into traditional building retrofit; sits on Government-level and technical working groups for sustainable refurbishment; and teaches regularly, from academic postgraduate degrees to professional, accredited training courses for designers, installers, site inspectors and planning teams. He has direct experience of low-energy refurbishment works from leading a series of high-profile, award-winning retrofits of listed Georgian buildings in Edinburgh’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, and works with architects on a wide range of traditional building retrofit projects.

Nicholas also holds a number of other positions relevant to this work: he is Associate Technical Director of the Sustainable Traditional Buildings Alliance (STBA), Affiliate of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC), Fellow of the former Centre of Refurbishment Excellence (CoRE), member of the Association for Environment Conscious Building (AECB), Steering Group member of the Green Register and part-time lecturer on the University of York’s IHBC-accredited Conservation Studies postgraduate MA degree course..
