This session is designed to outline the basic principles of sustainable building to give delegates the foundations for ongoing training sessions.  The session will be run and hosted by trainer Lucy Pedler of The Green Register, including a session from Andy Weeks of The Planet Mark Start

All Futureproof builder trainers are required to attend in order to become Futureproof Associate Builders, going on to offer on-site training. The session is also ideal for anyone as an introduction to sustainable building.

About the session - with trainer Andy Weeks of The Planet Mark Start

The Planet Mark Start is a collaboration with London-based Sustainability consultants, Planet First.

The premise of the session is that Sustainability is good for Business, and that Business is a power for good for society, as well as the environment.

The programme has been developed to help SMEs embrace sustainability generally, as well as specifically considering the very real Marketing opportunities such a strategy offers.

By embracing the "Measure, Engage Communicate”  commitment, delegates are able to earn The Planet Mark Start sustainability certification.

16.00 - 18.00 Introduction to Sustainable Building Practices

The second half of the session will be delivered by expert trainer and Green Register Director, Lucy Pedler.

Topics to include:

  • Global issues
  • National issues including key legislation (present and future) such as Part L, MEES etc.
  • Essential definitions 
  • Key issues relating to heat loss:
    - Solid wall insulation; IWI & EWI 
    - Roof and floor insulation
    - Thermal mass
    - Windows & doors
  • Moisture movement, airtightness, indoor air quality and ventilation
  • Low carbon technologies
  • Interior finishes, wellbeing & healthy buildings
  • Reducing water use
  • Overheating
  • Materials and reducing waste
  • Heritage issues

The session will be a combination of theory-based information and demonstrations of the principles using the house as a case study. All attendees will receive a Glossary of Terms to take away.
