A Walk in the Park – site visit and tour of Park Hill Housing Estate - Sheffield
Built between 1957 and 1961, Park Hill is a Grade II* listed building was inspired by Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation and the Smithsons' unbuilt schemes. The project is known worldwide for its brutalist architecture and the deck access scheme was viewed as revolutionary at the time.
The first phase of the redevelopment won national recognition for Sheffield by being nominated for the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2013.
This talk and site visit will be hosted and guided by developers Urban Splash who, with partners Places for People and Great Places, have been able to provide 96 affordable housing apartments and 28 Help-to-Buy in Phase 1 - significantly more than the 68 originally agreed.
After an introductory talk, delegates will be taken on a tour of the old and new parts of phase with potential access to a residents flat (tbc).
The redevelopment of Park Hill is split it into four phases – Phases 2 to 5. Phase 2 will see Urban Splash create 210 residential properties and Phase 3, following on with the development of 330 student housing units working with an external partner. The whole scheme will deliver a total of 130,000 square foot of commercial space. Phase 4 and 5 includes provision for the S1 Artspace Project, as well as open market and affordable housing. Work is expected to start on site early 2018, subject to planning.
Phase 1 includes 260 homes and 10 contemporary workspaces that are occupied with creative and digital businesses. There are currently 600 people living and working at Park Hill reflecting a mixed community that includes affordable housing, rented, owner occupiers - from young professionals to downsizers, as well as the businesses, Grace Owen Nursery and S1 Artspace that have provided a rolling arts programme. The public realm has been improved with landscaping and seating areas that has been enjoyed by residents and business since it opened in summer 2016.
Simon Gawthorpe Managing Director, Urban Splash says “Having been on site since 2007 it is great that we can fulfil our original ambitions for Park Hill. The aim has been to create a new quarter for the city of Sheffield where people want to live, work, play and visit. Some of that potential has been realised with the completion of the first phase and seeing a new mixed multi-generational community who want to put down roots in this area being established.”
Numbers are strictly limited so early booking is strongly advised.
Delegates to meet at the Urban Splash Sales office at 12.45 for a prompt start at 1pm. The Sales Office is at the main entrance of the developed part pf Park Hill – Phase 1.
