Practical and Straightforward Sustainable Building Training - By Builders for Builders.

Hot off the heels of the SOLD OUT site visit in November, we are back for a second look at the new build housing scheme for Somewhere Housing Association in Bedminster, Bristol.

Local contractors Earthwise and Greenheart Sustainable Construction will talk about how their method of working results in:

•    High quality, sustainable buildings
•    Satisfied clients
•    Proud builders

Ian Mawditt of FourWalls will be testing the building with a blower door test and there will be a demonstration showing how to use a thermal imaging camera to identify cold bridges.

Tom Heywood from Green Building Store will be giving a Q&A session on the MVHR system that Earthwise have installed.

The first of The Green Register's half-day Futureproof training events is an Introduction to Sustainable Construction. It will be delivered jointly with Greenheart Sustainable Construction.

The event will include:

  • LIVE AIRTIGHTNESS TEST
  • THERMAL IMAGING DEMONSTRATION
  • TALKS FROM BUILDERS FOR BUILDERS
  • Q&A WITH MVHR SYSTEM SUPPLIER
  • REFRESHMENTS

About the Trainers

Richard Hatfield, Director, Greenheart Sustainable Construction

Richard’s background is in civil engineering, environmental consultancy and carpentry. He built his first timber framed house for himself in 1999 and never looked back. When not at work or with his family, Richard can be found tinkering in his workshop being creative or cycling over the nearest hill.

Malcolm McMahon, Director, Greenheart Sustainable Construction

Malcolm started as an apprentice carpenter. On completing a Masters in Architectural Conservation he founded Greenheart with architect Bill Flinn, keen to challenge the 'builder' stereotype and make interesting, eco-friendly buildings within a fair working environment.

Lucy Pedler, Director, The Green Register

Lucy is an architect with 34 years of professional experience in the UK and USA and has particular expertise in sustainable building practices. She worked as a Product Specialist at Construction Resources, the UK’s first Ecological Building Centre, for five years.

In 1999, Lucy started her own sustainable architecture practice, archipeleco, designing buildings that have a low impact on the environment. She founded The Green Register in 2000 as part of her lifelong commitment to the promotion of sustainable building.

In 2005 Lucy created develeco limited, to offer refurbishments of existing buildings - usually in very poor condition - and transform the properties into sustainable, buildings fit for 21st century living.

Futureproof is a long-term, market acceleration initiative, supporting local building companies to develop low carbon retrofitting knowledge and skills to be able to respond to this demand.

Futureproof training is designed to equip local firms with the skills and knowledge to deliver high quality, satisfying works based on key sustainable construction principles and impartial training from a range of experts, all at heavily subsidised rates.

By offering local contractors business opportunities with appreciative customers through a supportive network of trained advisors, we can support the West of England’s homes to become fit for the future.

Builders and contractors involved in Futureproof will be connected with these customers, with tailored support for both parties throughout the process to successful completion of the work.

Futureproof is led by the Bristol based Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE), in partnership with expert organisations such as The Green Register. The initiative is backed by central government in recognition that improving the energy efficiency of UK housing stock will need a long term, locally-led change in the market.

Other Futureproof training sessions will cover:

  1. Heat Loss - (Insulation, Thermal Bridging, Avoiding Overheating, Windows and Doors, Practical Demos etc.)
  2. Air Tightness - (Building Physics, Balancing with Ventilation, Condensation, Risks of SWI, Thermal Imaging etc)
  3. Moisture Control - (Dynamic heat and moisture equilibrium, Risks, Ventilation mistakes, Interstitial Condensation, Health, Practical Demos etc.)
  4. Building Services - (Efficient heating & cooling systems, Efficient water heating systems, Smart controls, Low/zero carbon technologies etc.)
In addition, Futureproof will take an integrated approach to developing the retrofit supply chain through activity such as encouraging “early adopter” homeowners, Open Homes events to showcase retrofits, and quality assurance.
