Passivhaus Series: 4. Putting Passivhaus into Practice - Newcastle

Event four of our series of four half-day Passivhaus events held in conjunction with AECB CarbonLite.

The Green Register and AECB CarbonLite are pleased to be working together to provide four half-day technical sessions on the Passivhaus principles.

Although the full Passivhaus training is a fantastic way to gain an in depth understanding of all aspects of Passivhaus design, some construction professionals may not have the time or resources to be able to attend the typical Passivhaus two week course.

These half-day sessions offer insight into all the main principles i.e. what makes a good low energy, comfortable building based on the Passivhaus standard. The training is ideal for architects and other design professionals as the focus in these courses is on design principles.

The four sessions will be run by Mark Siddall and Eric Parks, both experts in the field.

Attendance will make you eligible for Green Register membership

Event Four: Putting Passivhaus into Practice, with Mark Siddall and Eric Parks

This session has been developed due to demand from participants to feedback on their own designs from experienced Passivhaus designers and certifiers. Modelled on the Architectural “crit” session where designs are presented and discussions follow about the critical design decisions made, this format has turned out to be effective in engaging all of the design team. During this session, a number of schemes will be shown and discussions followed based on achieving Passivhaus certification.

If you would like your design to be included, you will need to contact the trainers beforehand to arrange for your plans to be adapted for projection or printing as required.

Who should attend?
This course is aimed principally at building professionals in the UK:  Architects, Builders, Structural and Services Engineers, Quantity surveyors and Potential Clients – all can learn how to deliver real low energy buildings. It introduces the principles behind the Passivhaus standard and for achieving low energy performance. Unlike the full Passivhaus Designer course and exam, these sessions do not require calculations, but show the principles behind the standard so that every member of the design team can understand what the Passivhaus Designer on the team is doing.

About the trainers:

Eric Parks is an Architect and Certified Passivhaus Designer who has specialised solely in the field of ecological design and sustainable construction in both the US and UK. He has experience in research, development and prototyping of sustainable building systems with CMPBS in Austin, Texas.

In the UK, Eric’s architectural training and experience has taken place with two of the UK’s leading sustainable design specialists, Simmonds Mills: Architects, Builders and Eco Arc. Currently, Eric runs his own architecture practice and sustainable building consultancy.

Mark Siddall, of LEAP: Low Energy Architectural Practice, is a practicing architect with a keen interest building performance. Issues of usability and practicality inform his approach and have increasingly led to an appreciation of the need for an integrated, consensus based, design process.

He was project architect, and Passivhaus Designer, for 25 award winning, Passivhaus Certified dwellings at the Racecourse Estate, Houghton-le-Spring. He was also project architect on a number of award winning Retrofit for the Future projects that targeted an 80% reduction in carbon emissions. Mark is a technical advisor to the PassivHaus Trust and a part time lecturer at Northumbria University.

In addition to offering architectural services LEAP provides consultancy, energy analysis, project enabling and training for clients, design teams and constructors.
