The Principles of Thermal Bridging - London

Join us for a half-day seminar which presents an overview of the underlying principles of thermal bridging.

About the seminar

Trainer Matthew Brooke-Peat of Leeds Beckett University will identify different types of thermal bridge and illustrate the effect on building performance, as well as explaining and presenting:

  • the requirements of Building Regulations Part L that relate to thermal bridging
  • an overview of the contrasting approach to the treatment of thermal bridging under Passivhaus
  • the use of detail patterns from catalogues of standard solutions

The seminar will introduce thermal modelling of bespoke construction details and offer guidance on how to read and effectively utilise thermal bridging calculations to improve detailing.

Following on from Matthew, a break out session from Tom Dollard of Pollard Thomas Edwards will ask delegates to sketch over a number of part L accredited details, and improve the details for thermal performance. Best practice guidance will be examined.

To finish up, Tom will present the Zero Carbon Hub Builders Book, and pick out key details and issues relevant for delivering thermal performance.

Both trainers are keen to answer queries you may have, with two Q&A sessions forming part of this seminar.

About the trainers

Matthew Brooke-Peat is a Chartered Architectural Technologist, Chartered Builder, and Chartered Environmentalist. Since 1994, he has held positions in construction, architectural practice, academia and technical consultancy. He specialises in technical design, detailing, specification, and thermal bridging calculations. Matthew is currently the Course Director for Architectural Technology at Leeds Beckett University, and the Research Lead for Building Fabric Modelling and Design with the Leeds Sustainability Institute.

Tom Dollard is Head of Sustainable Design at Pollard Thomas Edwards. Tom works across the practice and industry to ensure practical, sustainable and energy efficient design.

Tom has wide experience as an Architect across all sectors but has specialised in low energy schools, housing and masterplanning. He is a certified Passivhaus designer, BREEAM and code assessor and brings this expertise into his work to ensure low energy buildings that perform as designed. His recent work for the Zero Carbon hub included leading the site review process for the performance gap project across 21 sites around the UK.  He has written the Zero Carbon Hub “builders book” to address workmanship on site and delivery of energy efficient homes.
