Twilight Talks

The Green Register's early evening talks supported by Ecomerchant: together promoting ethical, healthy sustainable building materials

The Green Register has proudly launched a new series of events for Autumn 2021. On the second Monday of each month, we’ll be running Twilight Talks - a relaxed and informal string of events on sustainable building matters to complement our regular training topics. Each one-hour event will be FREE of charge and feature short talks from one or more speakers. With Q&A and discussion sessions throughout, everyone is invited to be part of the conversation. We’ll be holding Twilight talks at 5-6pm, in the sweet spot between work and dinner – so join us to nourish the mind before replenishing the body!

Empty Homes to Cosy Homes - how to turn underused properties into affordable and sustainable homes for those most in need

The Green Register’s Twilight Talk series continues with an end of year discussion to explore how empty properties in the UK could be brought back into use for sustainable, low income housing.

Our main speakers will be from Habitat for Humanity Great Britain who will explain their “Empty Spaces to Homes” programme - the transformation of empty spaces into decent and affordable homes.

Speaker David Clare of Habitat for Humanity Great Britain will focus on the challenges of integrating sound environmental approaches to renovation and retrofit, whilst also achieving social value and outcomes… all within a constrained budget!

HFHGB have built up a deep working knowledge of renovation through their “Empty Spaces to Homes” programme, and more recent collaboration with The Green Register is providing very timely expertise to inform HFHGB’s working practices and apply ‘real world’ green retrofit principles to their conversion projects. These projects create homes for vulnerable groups in need of ‘move-on’ accommodation following institutional care. These projects become good-quality, secure and life-changing homes for these individuals and families.

David will be joined by Christopher Kerr from DJB Law who are one of HFHGB's Coalition partners on the “Empty Spaces to Homes” Campaign. They will be talking about the reason why they decided to join the "Empty Spaces to Homes" Coalition and their work in assisting with the development of a Toolkit that will enable many and varied organisations to adopt the systems and processes used within these conversion projects to assist those in real need of decent and affordable housing.

At the end of the event, we will hear from Katie Chedgey from HFHGB who will let us know about their Gingerbread House Challenge and to finish up there will be a prize draw for one lucky delegate to win some delicious festive gingerbread.
