Don't miss the latest Site Visit in this series - the last one was sold out so book your place now!

Greenheart in partnership with The Green Register are opening up their site at Eastrip Lane, Colerne for a Futureproof* site visit and talk about this contemporary three bedroomed timber frame house built to passivhaus standards.

The topics discussed in this tour and talk- materials used, MVHR, airtightness and methods of construction – are just as relevant to retrofit as new build projects.

The original design for the house was by S2 architects but Greenheart have taken the design and have prepared all construction detailing to passivhaus standards in conjunction with Piers Sadler. It has been designed to passivhaus standards and will be largely self sufficient in energy production with an ASHP (air source heat pump) and PV (solar photovoltaic panels).

The original bungalow on the site was demolished by Greenheart and crushed on site to provide the majority of hardcore required. The new house is built into the hill so that the living spaces are upstairs and benefit from the wonderful views across the valley, whilst the bathrooms and bedrooms are downstairs.

The building is timber frame constructed on site from 360mm timber I-beams and wrapped in 100mm Pavatex woodfibre boards. The external faces will be either render or geometric cement sheet panels, whilst the roof is anthracite corrugated cement sheet. Windows are from Internorm (passivhaus certified). All walls and roof will be insulated with Warmcel 500 Cellulose insulation.

The building is still under construction and so during the visit, it will be possible to see all aspects of the building fabric: air tightness layers, MVHR ducting, timber frame and Pavatex wood fibre.

About Futureproof

*Futureproof is a long-term, market acceleration initiative, supporting local building companies to develop low carbon retrofitting knowledge and skills to be able to respond to this demand. Futureproof training is designed to equip local firms with the skills and knowledge to deliver high quality, satisfying works based on key sustainable construction principles and impartial training from a range of experts, all at heavily subsidised rates.

By offering local contractors business opportunities with appreciative customers through a supportive network of trained advisors, we can support the West of England’s homes to become fit for the future.

As well as building capacity and knowledge through training, Futureproof is working to engage homeowners who are ready to do low carbon retrofit work on their homes, through awareness-raising campaigns and green open homes events.

Builders and contractors involved in Futureproof will be connected with these customers, with tailored support for both parties throughout the process to successful completion of the work. Futureproof is led by the Bristol based Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE), in partnership with expert organisations such as The Green Register. The initiative is backed by central government in recognition that improving the energy efficiency of UK housing stock will need a long term, locally-led change in the market.

Futureproof offers low carbon retrofit training for local firms, connecting them with customers who want the work done, and supporting both parties throughout the process. Join Futureproof, the long-term initiative that is stimulating local demand and supply-chains for low carbon retrofit in the West of England.
