The Green Register of Construction Professionals

The 4th RIBA South West and The Green Register annual conference looks closely
at the cutting-edge themes of the new green economy, the business case for using
sustainable technologies and incentives, and the balance between prosperity and economic
growth. We aim to demonstrate that a new economic model can provide opportunities for
forward thinking professionals to differentiate themselves from more conventional peers and
secure new opportunities through increased awareness and knowledge.

This conference discusses how we can work towards achieving the Government’s ambitious
target of an 80% reduction in CO2 by 2050 and remain economically active. Government
schemes including the Feed-in Tariffs, the Renewable Heat Incentive and Pay As You Save
are critically examined to enable delegates to make informed choices and distinguish
between what measures reduce carbon emissions and what is greenwash.

This conference gives an equivalent of 8 hours CPD and conforms to elements of the RIBA
core curriculum.

9.00 Introduction – Harry Rich, Chief Executive, RIBA
Harry sets the scene for today’s conference and asks what we hope to achieve and how that impact will enable delegates to be better prepared for a new economic model.

9.15 Towards the Low Carbon Economy - Nick Tune, Director, BRE Wales and South West
Nick starts the day by outlining recent and upcoming Government initiatives and
policy and explains in real terms what the construction industry’s contributions are to
carbon emissions, where reductions are or can be made, and why clients, developers
and professionals need to change in order to keep ahead of the game.

10.00 Learning from Europe – Speaker to be confirmed
What is the link between legislation and initiatives to reduce carbon emissions in the
UK construction industry and what is happening in Europe? We highlight the potential
conflicts and harmonisation of legislation between UK and Europe particularly with
renewables and where lessons can be learnt.

10.50 Freiburg 2010 to Bristol 2020...?
Klaus Hoppe, Head of Energy, Freiburg City Council
Depicting his own experience in Germany, Klaus demonstrates that significant carbon
reductions can be achieved whilst keeping a buoyant economy and identifies where
cultural differences might be a barrier to change in the UK. The Freiburg model is an
inspiration of where Bristol could be in 2020.

11.40 South West Futures: Bristol’s vision for 2020
David Bishop, Director of Development, Bristol City Council
In an inspiring vision for the UK in 2020, David describes where Bristol now relates to
the UK and abroad, what measures and initiatives are in place or are proposed to
improve the current situation, in particular looking at building fabric and renewables
and Bristol’s aspiration to be the UK leader in district heating schemes and similar
initiatives.

12.10 It Pays to be Green
Davis Langdon Cost Consultants and Bennetts Associates Architects
This exemplar case study, Elizabeth II Court Winchester, reveals the successful
transformation of a dilapidated 1960’s office block into a modern, efficient and
sustainable working environment for Hampshire County Council. It describes what
decisions were made about the specifications in order to achieve carbon reduction
targets referring to cost, design and environmental considerations.

14.00 Low Carbon Technologies: Getting the best bang for your buck
Cath Hassell, ech2o consultants
Learn about ‘the kit’ in this technical presentation on low carbon technologies
emphasising what is practical, what can be achieved with each technology, how they
sit within the discussion of fabric first. Includes explanation of FiT’s, PAYS, RHI and HESS.

The chance for delegates to engage in a more in-depth discussion on one of the
following options:

• Community Futures: Getting people on board – Klaus Hoppe
  A n essential part of a sustainable future is the social aspects of any
  development. Klaus leads an interactive session looking at the Freiburg model,
  asking delegates where they think the UK can learn from its successes and
  challenges.
• 
  Design Futures and the Public Purse? – RIBA Building Futures, Dickon Robinson
  What are the current policies and big ideas moulding our towns and cities in the
  coming decade and what effect will they really have on you as a professional?
  What can we do to capture the imagination of critical minds to ensure recovery
  in the UK does not revert to bad habits in good times? Join this facilitated
  mini-debate to question and learn from experts and your own peers.
• 
  Technical Futures: A practical workshop – Cath Hassell
  Delegates are offered the opportunity to use recently acquired knowledge
  to test the efficacy and appropriateness of renewable technologies using a
  working example.

87% of the homes that will be standing in 2050 are already built (DCLG), which is why government, industry and home owners are all looking into the benefits of refurbishing the existing housing stock.

More and more home owners are staying put in these challenging economic times but want to extend or refurbish their homes to accommodate an expanding family, build a home office or improve the environmental performance of their house.

Architects, surveyors and engineers are realising that there is a real demand for advice and services on renovating houses using sustainable principles but are not sure where to go to gain the knowledge required to undertake these challenging new projects.

Using case studies, discussions, practical exercises and samples, this course looks at the three key areas of: building fabric, appliances and temporary/seasonal measures and habits and lifestyle. You will learn how to use energy more consciously and efficiently, cut carbon and increase your comfort while reducing bills.

Who’s it for?
This course is aimed at homeowners who are new to eco refurbishment. It will look at no-cost to high-cost measures in order to demystify what it takes to live more sustainably in your home, whilst taking into account individual budgets and lifestyles.

Course Outline
Week 1 – Introductions and personal profiles, values, budgets and motives – a first look at your home and how it’s powered.
Week 2 – Understanding your home, energy awareness and monitoring, how you use your space and what's possible in your home and in your daily life.
Week 3 – Insulation – the ins and outs plus choices and tips.
Week 4 – Renewables – why, what and how.
Week 5 – Appliances, fixtures, fittings and temporary measures – user behaviour, new and second hand options – energy ratings. Developing eco-renovation options.
Week 6 – The inevitable outcome: Living lightly – you are what makes the biggest difference. Incentives, making and funding cost effective plans. Course evaluation and feedback.

Each week samples of materials and information relating to each week's topics will be provided.

Our approach is interactive and we encourage co-working and real-life cases to develop our own solutions throughout the course.

The Tutors
Martin Fodor was responsible for developing the Bristol Sustainable Development Guide for Construction for Bristol City Council, and has many years' experience of sustainable energy, being an independent assessor for several national renewable and sustainable energy grant programmes, including the previous Government's Low Carbon buildings Programme.

Maddy Longhurst is a planner who worked on regeneration projects for the Western Partnership for Sustainable Development and Bristol East Side Traders, and is experienced in participatory group techniques which will make the course both fun and practical, involving participants in exploring and reflecting on the potential to make changes to the building fabric in conjunction with a low impact approach to living.

Maddy and Martin are the founders of MakeyourhomeEco a new, practical learning-based initiative designed to enable the people of Bristol to start their own home-based eco projects, and to complement and enhance other green, community-led initiatives.
