Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) as an energy source - integrating renewable heating and cooling using ground source heat pump technology.

Marc Asker, Head of Renewables – Forterra PLC will outline a method designed to capture heat energy in Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems to provide a sustainable, low carbon and affordable means of producing energy for heating and cooling in buildings, and potentially contribute to a district heat network.

The first part of Marc’s presentation will be an overview of the main features of SUDS including the practical challenges, the legislative drivers and some case studies. Marc will also cover rainwater harvesting from SUDS systems, water quality, standards and uses.

After a Q&A session, Marc will then go on to describe how low grade heat energy from SUDS can be harnessed to provide the energy source for heat pumps and used in buildings for both heating and cooling.

Marc will also explain how such systems qualify for the highest tariff currently available from the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive, providing a lucrative twenty year revenue stream for non-domestic installations.

The differences between geothermal & ground source energy will be explained and how these differing forms of energy are used. Examples of these differing (conceptually similar) technologies will be presented and how schemes have been developed in the UK and overseas.

The seminar will conclude with “the car park of the future as a smart energy source.”
