Judging by the response and animated discussion that took place in the class immediately following the talk it was clear that the students were very appreciative of what they had heard and had understood the relevance not just in the project they are currently working on but also in their everyday working lives. Mick Jones of Barking College summed it up with “Job well done!”

Many thanks to delegates who took part in the series of CPD sessions I recently completed with RIBA’s North Region. Excellent feedback was received from all delegates, who all contributed to making these session lively and informative. The profile of renewable technologies has been growing relentlessly over the past few years, spurred on by countless government initiatives and regulation. Some planning authorities now even insist that a proportion of all the energy used in any new development comes from renewables sources as a planning condition. With the latest targets for UK CO2e emission levels set at 34% below 1990 levels by 2020, and with the government’s own delivery plan containing plans to cut CO2 emissions from the power sector by 50%, you could start to tentatively believe that the promise being made since the early 90s by some green groups that with the right support for the technology the UK could lead the world in low carbon energy production, might now at last be coming true. The Green Register held its new Accredited Eco-refurbishment seminar in Bristol on 24th June with a satisfyingly full house. We had three things in mind when creating this course - architects workload slowing down, people not being able to afford to move (and so needling to refurbish/expand their current abode) and the demand for advice on refurbishing houses using eco-principles and hey presto the course was born. Work in Cumbria is varied and diverse but predominantly involves renovation/refurbishment and extension of traditional buildings, many employing solid stone walls and dipping slate roofs. I attended the 2-day introductory course “Sustainable Building & Services”, at Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre, 1046, Bristol Road, Selly Oak, Birmingham, B29 6LJ, on 12th - 13th May, 2009, which was a very rewarding and enjoyably informative 2 days, with a small group of fellow architects in tranquil landscaped surroundings just off the A38.
